Overview
Partners for Development works at the community level to meet the basic human needs of underserved populations with self-help programs designed to build skills and self-reliance.
PFD’s programs are participatory and responsive in nature, with local partners taking an active role in designing, implementing, and monitoring programs. In addition to relying on community inputs, PFD’s programs are also designed to be consistent with local government concerns in order to maximize sustainability and appropriateness.
PFD’s work in health, agriculture, veterinary health, water & sanitation and small enterprise development helps to build capacity and reduce vulnerability for underserved populations. Specific project activities range from education and capacity-building efforts to technological inputs, infrastructure and market development, and policy formation at the local and national levels. Partners for Development strives to integrate program activities across sectors in order to maximize limited resources and to more fully meet the needs of local populations.
Recent Programs
The following examples are only a small representation of the extensive work that PFD does to improve the lives of vulnerable and underserved populations.
- In Nigeria, PFD's programs have formed small groups of micro-loan recipients, mostly women. Regular group meetings also serve as venues to communicate health and nutrition information to participants.
- In Cambodia, PFD works with the Ministry of Health and National Malaria Center, as well as community volunteers, teachers, school children, and health authorities and staff to increase the capacity of these organizations and community knowledge about malaria prevention and treatment.
- In Bosnia and Herzegovina, PFD's projects aligned with the government priority to develop the agriculture sector. PFD's integrated agricultural activities developed local capacity and improved household economic opportunities by also addressing micro-credit and market access.
